Basics of Energy Efficient Home Design

Good house design takes its form in part from the forces that act on it.  Climate and weather are two of the strongest form-makers (there are no igloos in the tropics) since houses must be designed and built to repel the damaging effects of the world we live in.  Mother Nature is always trying to tear our buildings down.

Climate and weather also affect the comfort of our homes, and cause us to seek out ways to maintain the temperature and humidity of our homes within tolerable levels.  A great deal of design effort is devoted to keeping the heat in or keeping the heat out, depending on the climate and season.

This Old House

At times throughout American history, the forms of our homes have reflected – to greater or lesser extents – our ingenuity in making our homes’ internal climates more comfortable.

Settlers in the Deep South built deep porches around their low-slung homes to shade them from the harsh sun and to create a reservoir of cooler air that could be drawn into the house.

Return to Original Style of Home Design in Japan

Japan is a country which is modern, fashionable but also traditional, low-pitch. In Tokyo, those skyscrapers and modern fashion designs will make you dazzling, and their high-tech tools also very advanced and high-developed, but if you entered in some common families in Japan you will find their foods, living room, and daily-use articles still been kept very traditional, especially in Kyoto, there are very few high-rise buildings, and most of buildings there are traditional low living houses, inside which there are tatamis, Japanese are accustomed to sitting and sleeping on the floor, that is a most traditional way of life in Japan.

In past time the demand rank of life in most Japan families was arranged according to food, clothing, transportation and living, now that has shifted to a new order as living first, transportation next, then clothing, and food last, which put the improvement of living conditions to the first place. And during the peorid of post-war, Japan began to emphasis much on both technical quality and talent development, which constructed a solid base for Japan’s rapid development later.

The Water Wise Way Beautiful Garden

Grow a beautiful garden the water wise way

Saving water and enjoying the beauty and environmental benefits of plants are not only possible, but easy says the American Association of Nurserymen (AAN). “Water Wise” gardening is built on some basic, commonsense principles:

Planning

Planning a water wise garden or landscape is as easy and fun-as planning any type of garden. Talk to the professionals at your local center/landscape firm to see which plants will do well in your area. You may be surprised to find that some very beautiful, colorful plants are low on water consumption-and they may fit into your landscape perfectly.

Group together plants that require the same amount of water. Plant trees and shrubs to provide shade to cool buildings, air conditioning units, patios, decks, and other landscape features.  Shelter container plants by moving them to shady areas. Spike or aerate lawns to insure maximum water penetration. Control weeds which compete with useful plants for water.

Home Improvement Tips Saving Heating Bills

As the cost of heating homes has gone higher, most people, especially the common man is scrambling for means to stay warm and have sufficient money to buy the daily necessities. Normally homes are heated by fuels like oil, natural gas, or electricity, which are getting overly expensive by the day. So what are the best home improvement tips to save on heating bills? Following are some methods that can help you conserve energy while saving a lot of cash.

Install A Programmable Thermostat In Your House

Programmable thermostats are quite less expensive and very easy to install. They permit an individual to control how the heating system is operated so that he/she conserves energy by running the system only when heat is required. A programmable thermostat is extremely handy and lets the user lower the heat to 60 degrees during night, increase it to 69 degrees a few minutes before they wake up, lower it down again when they leave the house, and make it go back to a cozy level right before the user comes back.

Mulch and Feed your Gardens

In Today’s throwaway society, there is absolutely no need to go out and purchase mulch material for your garden, unless it is for the particular aesthetic appearance, “The Look”, sake of the mulch material.

Were you aware that there are a number of mulching materials that you can obtain from around your own community that are free, and some of which can even be even delivered to you for nothing as well.

Impossible you might say. Well I mulch my gardens fairly heavily, and I never pay a cent for the mulch material. As a matter of fact, most of the mulch is willingly delivered to my home for nothing. As the former owners are only too glad to see the back of it, as it would cost them money, time and effort to find other ways of getting rid of it.

I also combine these outside sources of mulch with my own compost, weeds and other organic matter mixed through to achieve a great result in my garden, and so all that it costs me is time and effort.

So what am I talking about? While some of the below list is delivered free, other items I pick up myself, depending on time, circumstances, importance etc.

It won’t only save you hard-earned bucks but will also give you that sense of fulfillment that you know you’ve been longing for for quite some time now.

Here are a few home touchup tips that you can master in as little time as possible.

1. Don’t get out the paintbrush when Mr. Mighty Sun is not out.

Why? A paint job will go smoothly and the finish will be just as smooth if the weather is dry. You don’t want bubbles in your paintjob. One way to ensure that any effervescence won’t annoy the finish of your painted walls is to apply paint when it’s not raining. This also applies to your revarnishing table tops with rustic coats of varnish.
